Craps History

Pinning down the exact history of craps is something that is extremely difficult to do, but at the same time there are some things that are very definitively known about the history of the game of craps. The first is that craps is an extremely old game, predating the casinos of the United States . Most historians believe that the game of craps originated somewhere on the European continent, although at the same time it is probably not as old as the game of roulette. Roulette has a very distinctive European flair to it and it was a game that was played in many of the smaller gambling institutions in Europe whereas it appears as if the game of craps was more of a large casino game.

When the game crossed the ocean and came to the United States , there actually were not that many changes made to the game. Unlike roulette, blackjack and many of the other casino staples from Europe , craps has been able to remain relatively the same game compared to what it was when it was initially developed. It is possible that some of the extremely bad bets in the game were added in versions played in the United States , but since these bets also appear in the European versions of the game, there is not a lot of evidence in support of that theory.

The most likely scenario in all cases is that the game of craps today is very similar to the game of craps as it existed when it was originally invented. It has certainly been changed a lot less than all of the other casino staples and this is a fact that is evidenced by illustrating the point that only one major variant of craps exists to this very day. Contrast this to at least a half dozen variants of blackjack played in the different casinos around the world and the three major variants of roulette that exist and you will see that craps as a game has held to its old standards a lot better than any other game you'll find within the casino.
